This eco-lodge is located inside Cuyabeno National Park, with the reserve itself having been established in 1979 and covering over 650,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) of primary rainforest in the northeastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon around the Cuyabeno River. Accessible from the provincial Ecuadorian capital of Nueva Loja, over the years the reserve has become an important tourist destination because of its amazing animal and bird diversity, which includes twelve species of monkeys and well over 600 birds species. When the Cuyabeno Lodge began operating in 1988, the owners believed that rainforest travelers should be accommodated in conditions that would be both in harmony with the surrounding environment and attuned to the needs of the modern visitor. The lodge is certified by the Rainforest Alliance for its sustainable tourism practices and for its use of local materials in the construction of the facility. The lodge works closely with the local Siona indigenous community, whose members provide motor canoe transportation for the tours at the Cuyabeno Lodge.
